Do It Yourself with Letterpress Plates + Press Restoration!

Also in the Studio this past week, everyone in our Polymer Workshop, From Computer to Press is doing great work!  We have a variety of designs including children’s illustrations, art posters, and trendy note cards.

In addition to offering her close guidance on press, Mindy Belloff also help Vanessa restore her table top Adana press.  With some new rollers and a few more adjustments, it will be good to go!…

The New Contemporary Declaration of Independence

I went to press Saturday, July 10th on John Hancock’s signature.  I decided to print it in a light inky blue.  It looks awesome on the bright white cotton paper next to the deep black printed text.  The colophon reads:

In class this week, Pam worked on her new accordion book, printing layers of “X” designs in green, gray and violet; Jenna finished letterpress printing the last page of her funky but oh so elegant “Hello” book (a humorous homage to Lionel Ritchie) and Rich completed a few new books of layered wood type …

Declaration of Independence: New Version

Today I began swiping out the long-s pieces of Caslon type and quaints from the 1777 historical facsimile originally printed by Mary Katharine Goddard.

The new edition now states that “all People are created equal” instead of “all Men” – it is time to set the record straight!  I completed the first column, changing the ligatures and quaints with the long-s (that looks like an ‘f’).   I will need more …

The Art of Craftmanship

Last night we headed to Governor’s Island for an unusual exhibition of artisans and fashion designers (http://www.govisland.com/visit_the_island/default.asp).  Gavin Dovey of Paper Dragon Books (www.paperdragonbooks.blogspot.com) created an amazing leather binding.  The details and craftsmanship are awesome!  The talented leather bookbinder was inspired by the “Wrenching Times” edition from Gregynog Press.  Gavin created a new cover and endsheets.  He used Civil War photos from the archives of the Library of Congress, and …
