Consults + Tutorials
In 2004, Mindy Belloff opened her new Print Shop to artists, writers, and students of all levels of experience, offering letterpress printing and book arts workshops at Studio on the Square (Union Square, NYC). Studio on the SQ, or Intima Press Letterpress Studio, committed to helping artists develop their work in book form, and sharing many years of knowledge of elegant letterpress printing and the art of the book, as it has been handed down for over five centuries. Intimate class sizes allowed for individual attention much like an apprenticeship in Gutenberg’s shop.
With an emphasis on the Art of the Book, students were encouraged to free up their thinking and experiment through their art practice. The Studio prides itself on cultivating creativity within a unique environment where artists engage in the rewarding processes of combining text and imagery. Open dialogue and process along with product, distinguished our workshops. To date, classes have been suspended as art projects take priority, though individual instruction and group tutorials, as well as Book Consults, may be scheduled as time allows.
The teaching archives of the Studio, with approximately a thousand pieces of ephemera and books from over a decade of sharing the traditions of printing and the book with many hundreds of students, are held at Columbia University’s Butler Library, in New York City.
With a Master of Arts from New York University, Mindy Belloff’s teaching background includes visual arts classes taught in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and graduate studies in the history of the book at Long Island University’s Palmer School of Library Science. She has taught poets and writers as an Adjunct Professor at the New School Writing Program, letterpress and book arts at the School of Visual Arts, and workshops in the art of the book as a Visiting Artist at Pyramid Atlantic, the Center for Book Arts, the Women’s Studio Workshop, the New York Public Library, the American Museum of Folk Art, and Florida Atlantic University. She has taught painting and drawing through extension programs at Cornell University, Hofstra University, and the San Francisco Art Institute. She is available to lecture on contemporary books arts and book and printmaking workshops as a visiting artist (contact IntimaPress at yahoo.com).

How to start your own Press
Letterpress Business Consultation
You love letterpress and paper and are considering starting your own press but don’t know where to begin? Our consults in how to start your own press have helped people set-up and run their new businesses: from Australia to Israel, and from Florida to Arizona! Consults are customized for individuals, University print shops (starting up letterpress and book arts components), or for new or established businesses. Consultations include private instruction for your specific interests (art prints and broadsides, stationery, invitations, greeting cards, etc.). The focus may be on the basics of traditional typesetting and/or learning how to translate your digital computer designs to plates and going to press. It may also include bookbinding instruction.
Mindy Belloff provides important tips on designing specifically for letterpress, multiple color printing, and short-cuts that will save you time, money and headaches as you start your business venture. Choosing a press and knowing what equipment you will need to run a successful business or University print shop is essential.
A business consult ranges in price depending upon your specific interests, and all include contacts for equipment, detailed handouts, and a huge amount of information. Most tutorials are scheduled for one full day or two half-days to accommodate those traveling into New York City, with follow up e-mails afterwards. Contact the Studio with your goals outlined, and we will customize a proposal just for you.
* Please note, classes are currently not scheduled. The classes listed below can be customized for a private individual or group tutorial.
