Boston Athenæum On View

Re-Reading Special Collections at the Boston Athenæum: Ongoing installation beginning November 15, 2022

Hester . Emma . Sonia on exhibit as part of an installation featuring work in conversation with portraits and self-portraits by women artists: Re-Reading Special Collections at the Boston Athenaeum encompasses several permanent collection installations in our historic building, ranging from a long-term reinstallation of paintings and sculpture to short-term, focused exhibitions of light-sensitive items. Re-Reading Special Collections reinterprets our National Historic Landmark building’s publicly-accessible first floor to reflect a more expansive view of American art and history across a range of media. The reinstallation focuses on the Henry Long Room, a large multi-functional area used as a permanent collection gallery, lecture hall, event space, and starting point for tours. By deploying archive-driven historical research and theoretically-informed interpretive frameworks, Re-Reading presents collections items with a critical eye toward the past. Showcasing a diverse array of rare books, works on paper, paintings, and sculptures, the installation brings a fresh perspective to lesser-known and beloved materials alike. This project was made possible by a Re-envisioning Permanent Collections Grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art.  https://bostonathenaeum.org/visit/exhibitions/reinstallation/

PARENTHESIS 45
Fine Press Book Association Journal, Autumn 2023
Review of  Hester . Emma . Sonia by Lauren Graves

In her review of this 300-page volume featuring Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Flaubert’s Madam Bovary, and Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, Lauren Graves writes, “Belloff, through her intervention and reworking of the canonical texts, re-presents the narratives to challenge the linearity of each, intervening in the text’s singular, typically masculine reading. Through her countless addendums to the main stories, Belloff presents a cacophony of voices – at times harmonious and occasionally discordant – that encourage the reader to further mine and dissect the book’s text and structure to make room for a subjective, feminist reading. Furthermore, the book’s dialogic and active nature comes forward in the page design….Other voices are found when examining the written word in relation to the many artworks printed alongside the multiple narratives.”   FPBA HesterEmmaSoniaReview2023

CBS This Morning Saturday, July 4, 2020 the Goddard Declaration

CBS This Morning Saturday with reporter Dana Jacobson did a lovely segment on Mary Katharine Goddard, with historian Martha King, and my re-creation and re-writing of the “Unanimous Declaration of Independence” (2008-2010). Here’s hoping for a more equitable Union in 2020. Happy Independence Day!

A Golden Thread: The Minotaur – Video from Intima Press

Mindy Belloff produces fine letterpress printed editions under the imprint Intima Press, as the only private press in Manhattan. She has been creating art for 40 years as a painter, photographer and mixed media installation artist, and 25 years as a book artist. “A Golden Thread: The Minotaur, A Contemporary Illumination,” is her newest tour de force edition. Featuring the text of the classic Greek tragedy, “The Minotaur” by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1853), it remains a spirited read as it comes to life through unique typographical designs and 100 original drawings. Each page is meticulously letterpress printed in multiple press runs with an elegant color palette. The volume inspired an exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum from the Phillips Library, which was on view through March 2020. An award winning book, “A Golden Thread” was judged among the best in show at the 2020 Fine Press Book Association Fair. It was beautifully reviewed by Michael Ryan in the most recent Parenthesis 37 Journal of the Fine Press Book Association, and by Barbara Basbanes Richter, of the Fine Books & Collections Magazine. “A Golden Thread” is limited to 32 standard and 8 deluxe design bindings (two of which are shown in the film).

PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM
September 28, 2019 through March 29, 2020 . Salem, Massachusetts

The Creative Legacy of Nathaniel Hawthorne: Selections from the Phillips Library Collection
Featuring A Golden Thread, by Mindy Belloff, Intima Press, text of The Minotaur, by Nathaniel Hawthorne from Tanglewood Tales, 1853.
This is the first exhibition in a new gallery dedicated to showcasing works from the museum’s research library. Nathaniel Hawthorne is integral to Salem’s rich history, and PEM’s Phillips Library collection includes over 3,000 individual volumes by the author. The library’s recent acquisition of Mindy Belloff’s A Golden Thread, a contemporary reinterpretation of Hawthorne’s short story The Minotaur, considers the links between past and present, visual and verbal, and how artists have drawn on one another’s work throughout time. Focusing on the visual artistry of bookmaking and printing, from cover designs to typography, this exhibition highlights the full creativity present in books as art objects.  See PEM blog: https://www.pem.org/blog/nathaniel-hawthornes-creative-legacy
