In 2008 I announced I would be recreating the printing of the Declaration of Independence by Mary Katharine Goddard. I then re-wrote the Declaration, creating a second, inclusive, unambiguous edition stating “all People” are created equal.
I have worked for 18 years to try to get Mary K written back into the historical record and happy to see the Goddard being talked about, not just the Dunlap – lecturing and writing about the accomplishments of this extraordinary woman – newspaper editor, compositor, and Postmistress of Baltimore for 14 years. A true proponent of freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
We all have to work to make sure this inclusive language reflects a true and ongoing democracy.
