The Golden Hair of Medusa – Notes from the Studio Summer 2024

The Golden Hair of Medusa
A Contemporary Illumination
Mindy Belloff, Intima Press, NY

I hope you have all been enjoying the slower Summer pace. For me, summer months are when I am able to ramp up and work even longer hours, day and night. I am very pleased with the progress of the new edition. Here are a few quick updates from the studio…

Black Folios

Most of the printing on the black papers are now completed aside from two pages, which I will finalize by the first week of September. While I do not like to give away all the visual surprises the viewer looks forward to when turning the pages, I will share the progress on this pretty snake. The letterpress is complete and hand painting continues on 50 sheets – halfway there!

White Papers

There are two sections of white: the first is at the beginning of the book and the second is comprised of the last section. I finally received the shipment of 560 white sheets last month in mid-July. Unfortunately, half the sheets were not acceptable (some had a strange squiggly pattern in the pulp, others had shrunk in the drying process and were not the proper size). They are being pulled again and I hope to have them in hand by mid-September. Fortunately, there was enough paper for the front section, and I have been happily working nonstop. I expect to complete printing of these folios next week. I will then begin hand painting. Above, are a few sneak peeks of pages in progress. I enjoyed working with a lively color palette of reds, blues, corals, purples, and a lovely soft green. The letterpress looks luscious on the beautifully textured handmade papers.

Until the next update!
