Intima Press Produces Illuminated Letterpress Edition of a Hawthorne Classic By on March 20, 2020: And now, a post totally unrelated to coronavirus, because we need to remember the beautiful things that light up our world: Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story “The Minotaur,” first appeared in 1853 with other retellings of ancient myths, refashioned to highlight the nature of evil and the fear inherent in facing and conquering our deepest secrets. In the hands of Intima Press founder Mindy Belloff, a new illustrated edition fully captures the nuances of Hawthorne’s work while also a testament to a master at her craft.
posed of 100 original drawings, each page features elegant and meticulous design and typography. This hand sewn, fine press work is an edition of 32 standard, with eight volumes reserved for design bindings, one of which includes 38 gemstones and mother-of-pearl, while another features a full vellum binding and 23-karat gold labyrinth. Subsequent design bindings are in production.This fine press publication was recently awarded the first Fine Press Book Association Collector’s Prize during New York’s Rare Book Week and was also considered among the best books in the show at the 2020 Manhattan Fine Press Fair.
As the only private press located in Manhattan, Intima Press has been producing exquisite fine art books, broadside editions, and other hand-crafted paper treasures for 25 years, 16 of those based out of a studio in Union Square, where visitors are welcome by appointment.
A copy of the Intima “Minotaur” was recently added to the 3,000+ collection of Hawthorne material located at the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts, which included the book in its current exhibition on Hawthorne entitled, The Creative Legacy of Nathaniel Hawthorne: Selections from the Phillips Library Collection. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the museum is closed to the public until further notice.
